I'm trying to figure that out, and I'm giving myself a headache! Here's what I've been able to find so far:
-Shares on Soulseek state that "Lovely Witch" was originally released on a 2002 compilation called "I Venti D'azzurro 192", which I can find absolutely no proof of besides some random ZIP files floating around on the Internet. There is an Italodance label called I Venti D'azzurro that's been around since the 90's, and they're definitely related to this song, because...
- In 2008, I Venti D'azzurro released the single "Lovely Witch" by Monika Novak... and it's the same song. Rearranged to sound more like a classic Italo-Disco song, but still the same song. From what I can tell, this was first released in 2008, but I don't know if it was recorded/mixed then or pulled out of an archive after collecting dust. I also think it sounds like the same vocalist, just not pitched up.
So, what about the artist name "X-One"?
- X-One was an alias used by Alberto Carpani for one single, "Wet Wet Wet". Alberto was Italian and he released the single in 2002, which is a hell of a coincidence. Furthering the coincidence is that he did re-release A.C. One's "Sing A Song Now Now" on I Venti D'azzurro in 2015. So, did Alberto have something to do with the original track from 2002? Maybe... or maybe not?"Wet Wet Wet" has no female vocals, and Discogs credits the writers of "Lovely Witch" as Marco Parmigiani and Marta Dellupi, with no mention of Carpani. (And to connect the dots further, Marta Dellupi is none other than Mardie, who performed "Sexy Witch"! The songs have nothing to do with each other, but I take it she likes attractive witches!)
-There's apparently a CD promo of the song - only one track, ripped and released to the Internet by the scene group "KTMP3". This upload sadly does not include cover art, or any other information that could help us determine exactly what this promo was... besides the fact that in their release, the song is tagged "Lovely Witch (Promo Edit)". That's the version that I have, the version on YouTube, and I assume the version that everyone who has that song has.
So... where does that leave us? Was "Lovely Witch" originally performed as a bubblegum Italodance song in 2002 by Monika Novak, then remixed into a more classic disco sound? Did Alberto Carpani have anything to do with it?
I found Monika on Facebook, but she hasn't posted since 2014, and Alberto is no longer with us... so what now?
