If you read the Top 10 Play Count thread, then you noticed that my iPod had another accident, this time with a cord getting knocked out. I have bad luck with music. I still had most of what I lost on my computer, so it could have been worse, but next time I may not be so lucky. Thus, I'm considering asking for an external drive for Christmas. That way I can at least have my music in two places - if one place bombs, I can copy it back on the other. Does anyone know of a good brand? What I'm looking for:
-Portability is a MUST. I travel back and forth between my grandmother's and my mother's houses and would like to be able to pack it.
-mom's already told me I have a $200 cap on Christmas presents this year and it would kind of suck to only get one gift, so I'm looking for one in the $100 or so price range. I saw 500 GB ones for $80, but I don't know their quality (hence why I'm asking you guys), so while I'm at it, what's the average price for one that's expected to last fairly long?
-since this thing's only going to be used for music and writing, Word documents don't take up much space, and if I ever get more music than I can fit on my iPod then I'll step back and look at my life a little, I don't need a giant one. Heck, even the 500 seems to be a bit overkill. And if they even come fancier than "holds stuff", I don't need bells and whistles. Just, well, holds stuff.
So, with that in mind, any recommendations or things I should know generally about external drives? Normally I'd feel bad asking for specific presents down to the model, but mom's already told me point blank that she has no idea what to get me and is considering just chucking the money into my bank account. That's BORING. And if I'm getting an external drive, I don't want one that'll drop dead within months. So, advice before I go off printing Amazon listings?
