SMiLE.dk // "Our Little Corner" - Opinions?

I can only say the same. This song in not BGD at all. And what's the thing with going on tour on her own? Smile.dk is a group, not a solo artist. Yes Smile.dk died with Hanna Stockzell and her songwriting (she wrote most of the songs on PATW). Don't like this production team either. The old team was way better, the team of Team Dicaster. They are working on really cool things still. Sigh...a disappointment this.

While I'll say this song is "good", it's not really anywhere near any of the previous Smile.dk songs. Smile.dk was always a group, now a solo act doesn't feel that great like before. Also the complete change of style was not a great decision. I expected at least a "Moshi Moshi" like production. (I like the song though). I think it's still a good song to be in the album but for a single release after several years, I expected something that can instantly grab the attention of fans.

I really like it! Cesar's point about it sounding very debut album-era is very accurate. I do think it sounds a little off by not having another vocalist, but this is also the first SMiLE song to focus solely on Veronica, so that's normal. It also sounds a lot like Veronica's solo stuff from her old MySpace page, which is good because all of that was high-quality but unfortunately there's not a lot of information about who was behind that material.

I think if this song were handled by any other, newer, production team, it wouldn't carry itself as well, if that makes sense? I've heard this specific sound within the BGD genre (slightly mellower in terms of tone, slightly rave-ier synthesizers, etc.) but it's almost never produced this fully and ends up sounding like something that was banged out quickly to fill out a cheap compilation. This, however, is super, super solid by itself, but is also a really great leading single and definitely achieves its goal as a lead single, which is to pump me up for the eventual (KNOCK ON WOOD) full-length. If the rest of the album is filled with songs of this caliber, I can totally stand that

As an aside, I know a little bit of where the detractors (I don't really wanna call you guys that, but I'm slightly tired and can't be bothered to look up synonyms ) are coming from; SMiLE's sound as a whole has been so, so good for so long, and this long, 7-year hiatus with only two songs to tide you over for what is, at the end of the day, a Best Of/See How Far We've Come album is frustrating. I think the anticipation has led to us all building up a sound that we were really hoping for from the new album - completely normal! - but the wait made us think that they were really pulling out all the stops in the most fantastical ways. Realistically, they had a lot of setbacks and now they're scrambling to release the album (throws salt over shoulder) on schedule this time, the fact that they're releasing music that is typical SMiLE quality (read: fairly high quality) it kind of isn't enough. I've seen this happen with so many other musicians, where the new music is standard for the band (worst case scenario) to really fantastic but too different for the older fans (best case, I guess) and the new music is immediately met to really mixed-to-bad reception, but most people come around and warm up to it to some degree after they've digested it a bit.

tl;dr your feelings are totally valid (plus music quality/art quality overall is pretty subjective) and also new music from old favorites is scary sometimes bc you love them so much that your expectations can be too high, because of how much you love them

I'd just like to preface this by saying that I'm glad that many of you like it. Good for you guys! Keep in mind that everything I'm saying is meant to part of a lighthearted discussion. Now, Cesar, I'm just going to point out that you are comparing this song to a forgotten filler track from the first album. Nobody listens to "Tic Toc," and it wasn't a lead single from the album in the first place. People listen to "Butterfly," "Coconut," "Boys," and "Mr. Wonderful" from the first album, not "Tic Toc!" Basically Smile.dk has declined so much that they're currently releasing a lead single that compares to filler tracks from their other albums!

P.S. The lyrics in the song are totally unbubblegummy too. As if anyone wants to hear about a girl struggling through life and caring for her sick old mother. Can you say depressing? We need happy lyrics about butterflies, samurais, and hummingbirds! 

Wow, I'm shocked at the number of negative comments surrounding this song! I think it's a great tune, with a very uplifting and positive message. When I first heard it, the melody was stuck in my head for ages afterwards - and I think that's a sign of excellent song writing. I must admit I was a little surprised at the angle Christian Wolf went with production wise, but this song has definitely grown on me and Veronica's singing is beautiful. I think it's well done considering it's only one singer, the way they've layered her vocals makes it sound like there's two girls which is very clever.

I love the cute lyrics.. - "checking in on mama to make sure that she's OK" (I don't find this depressing at all lol, I think it's cute it's not like she mentions she's dying or something) - and it's a typical love song which is common for bubblegum and definitely lyrically on par with the likes of "Love & Devotion" and "Heal My Broken Heart" as Cesar said. A comment that it is "commercial pop" made me laugh - I can't imagine hearing something this cheesy on the radio today, and if I did please hook me up with that radio station ASAP.

I'd also like to mention I've heard a snippet of a new song from the album (I guess there's some perks of running this site ) and it's very much a traditional bubblegum song with more electronic/synthesiser driven music... which is sure to please those people who don't want Smile.dk's sound to ever change hehe

I'd love to hear some producers opinions on this song and the angle Christian Wolf went with production. PATW actually received a LOT of criticism from producers, who said Dicaster's production style was unoriginal and tried to copy Smile.dk's older style too much. I liked it personally, but I think it was the song writing that really made PATW shine - Hanna really is a very talented artist. I think it's interesting just how different this track is from "Moshi Moshi", however, as both were produced by the same person.

It's a good song and the lyrics are true to the spirit of smile.dk. I just think it's strange to hear it as a solo artist. I'm not saying it's bad but it'll take some getting used to.

I'll repeat myself, Smile.dk didn't "die" in 2009. Veronica and Nina were the founding members of Smile.dk, Malin, Hanna and Cecilia have all sung for Smile.dk, Hanna's production team but a LOT of wonderful work and love into "Party Around The World", but Smile.dk hasn't died at all, just evolved. So what if it's one member and not two? Veronica is the heart and soul of Smile.dk, and as long as she's here, Smile.dk may have breaks, but they will never truly "die". As for Hanna, yes, I know about Born To Move and I'm so happy for her, she's so amazing and deserves all the best as well!

Also, let's all remember that Veronica and Cecilia both got pregnant within less than a year apart, they chose to take a break, I think Smile.dk were on a long break before finally returning to the studio to focus on their family, rather than just their work.
